Here are the main points:
Positive
- People without bags perform much better at home and at work.
- “Those who are free of bags want to help others find the same freedom. Those who are free of bags make excellent leaders. Healthy spirituality gives people meaning in life and the strength to overcome adversity.”(pg. 85)
- Those who are willing to face their emotional baggage and get rid of it make the best leaders and role models. Leadership development requires healthy emotions. People skills improve as baggage is removed.
- It’s important to promote a culture of recovery
Negative
- A leader who doesn’t care about his employees is ineffective and leads to poor productivity.
- A leader who is constantly micro managing, abusive, and oblivious to the feeling or worth of others obstructs worker productivity.
- Managers with bags are de-motivating. Managers who care more about their equipment as assets more than their staff use fear to control people. They don’t value others. “They don’t care enough about people to spot problems like depression and burnout sufficiently early to intervene and prevent disability.” (pg. 38)
- “Fear causes managers to micromanage, control, and slowdown work flow. When mental health conditions are ignored, not only does productivity suffer, but people may die needlessly. “ (pg. 44)
- Bags isolate people and block communication.
- Lack of self-confidence torpedoes creativity and productivity.
- Unresolved issues breed resentment and revenge. Angry people are unproductive and contagious.
